Sonoma vs. Columbia: A Blind Wine Showdown on the Delizioso Patio!

Think you can tell the difference between a wine from California and one from Washington State? Let’s find out! Join us for a relaxed blind tasting where Sonoma Valley and Columbia Valley go glass‑to‑glass.

The Campbell’s, who recently returned from a Columbia Valley wine tour, have selected some of the most iconic wineries from the Red Mountain, Walla Walla and Horse Heaven Hills AVAs. The Breloff’s, big fans of Sonoma Valley, have selected excellent wines that showcase one of the world’s most well regarded wine regions.

Come to enjoy great wine, good company, and a little friendly competition. After the reveal, we’ll tally the favorites and crown the champion.

Please bring 2 wine glasses and wine to share.

Starting with refreshing Rose’s from Provence to the full-bodied Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf -du-Pape, the tasting will focus on the 2023 vintage which was recently described by Wine Spectator as “Outstanding”. The Grenache grape is prominently featured in these wines; blended with Syrah and many other rare varieties of grapes. There are 171 districts producing Cotes du Rhone wines in the Southern Rhone Valley and while some of these wines can be expensive, we will explore some excellent wines that are very approachable

In this first tasting Dean & Bonnie are having in July, Dean has purchased 7 wines from Pio Cesare Winery. These wines are Barolo and Barbarossa DOCG wines. The winery is in the Piedmont Region of Italy. Dean indicates:

We will be doing this tasting with a video from Vincent Atler. He does the wine show, “V is for Vino”. In this video, Vince talks about the Piedmont region, the winery and he prepares Pollo alla Cacciatora and Risotto with the winemaker’s wife.

We will also have this for dinner and tasting the same wines as in the video. This tasting will also be limited to about 15 people.

The tasting will be on our deck and not in the vineyard. We are in the process of downsizing the vineyard as the price and demand for local grapes is diminishing. And I am enjoying retirement too much to work in the vineyard all summer. We took out 8 rows of vines last year and 10 this year. So, sorry, no more tasting in the vineyard this year.

History of the Wine Game:

About 6 years ago I was studying for the wine judge program and Shannon and Dave were doing the Somm program and we had a lot of young winemakers and foreign winery interns in the area, so we started doing wine tasting in the vineyard every week. These tastings became blind tastings and turned into a game of who could figure out what wine we were tasting. The guessing game became more competitive and soon people were guessing more than varieties, they were guessing style, regions, vintage, and the price of the wines. As the tastings grew the keeping score idea became bragging rights and soon the wine score sheet game was invented.

So, this LVAWS tasting will be limited to about 15 people. I will purchase 6-8 wines, and we will do a blind tasting and use the score sheets (see below). This will not be your typical tasting and be aware there will be a lot of debate, discussion and analyzing of the wines. This can be a lot of fun and tasting skill building. The experts are not always right.
